Amino acid derivative and an intermediate, by-product, or modulator of several metabolic pathways. Competitive inhibitor (versus AdoMet) of DNA methyltransferases (S-adenosyl-L-methionine (AdoMet)-dependent methyltransferases). Used in a variety of studies on epigenetics in hyperhomocysteinemic states.
