Utilizes the live cell carbocyanine dye JC-1 which indicates changes in ΔΨm, the electrochemical gradient across the mitochondrial membranes by reversibly changing its emission from green in non-polar mitochondria to orange/red J aggregates in hyperpolarized mitochondria.

This kit provides 5 ready to use vials of JC-1 to stain mitochondria in live cells. Samples can be stained in complete media to minimize disruption of experimental conditions or in the supplied 5X concentrate Opti-Klear™ Live Cell Imaging Buffer to reduce the fluorescence background associated with most media. Useful in nearly all cell types tested, JC-1 remains one of the most reliable markers of mitochondrial health in live cells.
