  • Product overview

Abcam's Transferrin Dog ELISA Kit is an in vitro enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the quantitative measurement of Transferrin levels in serum, tissue extracts and other biological fluids.

In this assay the Transferrin present in samples reacts with the anti-Transferrin antibodies which have been adsorbed to the surface of polystyrene microtitre wells. After the removal of unbound proteins by washing, anti-Transferrin antibodies conjugated with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) are added. These enzyme-labeled antibodies form complexes with the previously bound Transferrin. Following another washing step, the enzyme bound to the immunosorbent is assayed by the addition of a chromogenic substrate, 3,3’,5,5’-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The quantity of bound enzyme varies directly with the concentration of Transferrin in the sample tested; thus, the absorbance, at 450 nm, is a measure of the concentration of Transferrin in the test sample. The quantity of Transferrin in the test sample can be interpolated from the standard curve constructed from the standards, and corrected for sample dilution.

  • Function

Transferrins are iron binding transport proteins which can bind two Fe(3+) ions in association with the binding of an anion, usually bicarbonate. It is responsible for the transport of iron from sites of absorption and heme degradation to those of storage and utilization. Serum transferrin may also have a further role in stimulating cell proliferation.
  • Tissue specificity

Expressed by the liver and secreted in plasma.
  • Involvement in disease

Defects in TF are the cause of atransferrinemia (ATRAF) [MIM:209300]. Atransferrinemia is rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by iron overload and hypochromic anemia.
  • Sequence similarities

    Belongs to the transferrin family.
    Contains 2 transferrin-like domains.
  • Cellular localization

    Secreted.
