Product overview
Abcam’s IFN gamma bovine ELISA Kit (ab193681) is an in vitro enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the quantitative measurement of bovine IFN gamma in serum, plasmas and cell culture supernatant. Plasma sample should be collected using EDTA or citrate as an anticoagulant. Heparin is not recommended for use in this assay.
This assay employs an antibody specific for bovine IFN gamma coated on a 96-well plate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and the immobilized antibody captures IFN gamma present in the samples. The wells are washed and biotinylated anti-bovine IFN gamma antibody is added. After washing away any unbound biotinylated antibody, an HRP-conjugated streptavidin is pipetted to the wells. After incubation, the wells are again washed, followed by the addition of a TMB substrate solution to the wells. Color will develop in proportion to the amount of IFN gamma bound in each well. Addition of the Stop Solution will change the color from blue to yellow, and the intensity of the color is measured at 450 nm.
We have not been able to detect endogenous Bovine Interferon gamma in normal serum with ab193681, only in serum spiked with Bovine Interferon gamma.

Function
Produced by lymphocytes activated by specific antigens or mitogens. IFN-gamma, in addition to having antiviral activity, has important immunoregulatory functions. It is a potent activator of macrophages, it has antiproliferative effects on transformed cells and it can potentiate the antiviral and antitumor effects of the type I interferons. -
Tissue specificity
Released primarily from activated T lymphocytes. -
Involvement in disease
In Caucasians, genetic variation in IFNG is associated with the risk of aplastic anemia (AA) [MIM:609135]. AA is a rare disease in which the reduction of the circulating blood cells results from damage to the stem cell pool in bone marrow. In most patients, the stem cell lesion is caused by an autoimmune attack. T-lymphocytes, activated by an endogenous or exogenous, and most often unknown antigenic stimulus, secrete cytokines, including IFN-gamma, which would in turn be able to suppress hematopoiesis. -
Sequence similarities
Belongs to the type II (or gamma) interferon family. -
Post-translational
